PROSTHODONTIC DENTISTRY
_Definition:
That branch of dental art and science pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral function by the replacement of missing teeth and structures by artificial device.
The artificial devices are –
i. Crown
ii. Bridge
iii. Partial denture
iv. Complete denture
v. Maxillofacial prosthetic
vi. Immediate denture
vii. Implant

Crown:
_Crown: It is indicated by following cases:-
1. Extensive caries
2. Marked Discoloration
3. Malformation
4. Accidental causes such as fractures
5. Mal position of teeth
6. Marked abrasion and erosion of teeth
7. As a retainer for bridgework

9. Splinting
Advantages of crown:
a. It is the most desirable for the patient because of its natural color and function
b. It does not irritate the pulp
c. It does not produce gingival irritation
Disadvantages of crown:
a. Very difficult to construct
b. Expensive
c. Not the best marginal fit
d. Comparatively weak
e. Easily fracture

1. Restoration of function of mastication
2. Correction of the speech defect
3. Correction of disturbed
4. Correction of facial dimension

a. Ulceration in oral cavity
b. Pain in TM joint
c. Bomiting
d. Injury to the adjacent teeth
e. Angular stomatitis

Bridge: It is a one type of fixed prosthodontics appliances. It is indicated in partial missing tooth bearing area.

Immediate denture:
An immediate denture is a denture that is constructed before all the remaining teeth have been removed and is inserted immediately after the removal of all remaining teeth.
Advantages of immediate denture:
a. The patient does not have to go through the humiliating edentulous period of healing
b. The denture acts as a protecting splint for the open wound and thus aids healing
c. There is less dread of the edentulous period
d. There is less difficulty in repositioning the surrounding structures
Disadvantages of immediate denture:
a. Time involved
b. Additional expense
